PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT COURSES ON SCHEDULE FOR MONTH OF OCTOBER

(COLUMBIA, Tenn. - Sept. 27, 2012) - - - Columbia State Community College's Center for Workforce Development is offering a variety professional development courses during the month of October. Registration for all classes must be done at least two days prior to the first day of class.

Introduction to Excel 2010 teaches students how to sort and analyze data, design custom charts and graphs, and format worksheets using mathematical formulas. The one-day course will be on the Columbia campus Friday, Oct. 5.
The Introduction to QuickBooks 2010 course covers banking and billing activities, working with reports and budgets, and protecting and backing up data. This class will be Friday, Oct. 12 on the Columbia Campus.
Microsoft Project 2010 teaches you how to effectively plan, implement and control projects using Microsoft Project 2010. You'll learn how to think through and organize your project's details, plan a schedule, sequence tasks, produce a baseline, assign resources and costs, track your progress, identify and analyze variances, and revise your project plan. This class will be on Friday, Oct. 19 on the Columbia campus.
Advanced Microsoft Project 2010 will be on Friday, Oct. 26 on the Columbia campus.
Introduction to Strategic Planning teaches students how vision and mission are important in strategic planning, how to conduct a basic SWOT analysis, how/why consensus building is important in planning, how to identify metrics for measuring progress, and why it is important to identify obstacles and setting plans for overcoming them. This class is Oct. 15 and will be on the Columbia campus.
Delegating for Results is offered in conjunction with the Leadership Series. This course helps you identify tasks and responsibilities that can be delegated, determine the most effective method of allocation, and assess the scope of delegated tasks, while identifying the appropriate level of authority and support to give the people doing the work. It also uses a set of criteria to select the best people for tasks and responsibilities. You will learn how to use the interaction process to conduct delegation discussions that meet personal and practical needs. This class will be on the Columbia campus Wednesday, Oct. 10.
Introduction to GIS covers basic skills involved in using Geographic Information System software. Upon completion of this 15-hour course, students will be able to display, search and edit data, and produce simple maps. The five-week class begins on Monday, Oct. 22 on the Columbia campus.
Paralegal Career Advancement Certificate trains you to interview witnesses, investigate complex fact patterns, research the law, prepare legal documents, and assist in preparing cases for courtroom litigation. Topics include legal terminology, introduction to the evidentiary predicate, identifying relevant authority, legal research, and legal writing and appellate procedure. This six-weekend class is on Saturdays and Sundays beginning Oct. 13 on the Columbia Campus. An online version of the class begins Monday, Oct. 15.
EMT Refresher is a 24-hour course that provides participants with a review and update on the care and treatment of medical trauma emergencies. Participants completing this course will meet the refresher requirements for recertification with the National Registry. Participants must register at least two weeks before the class begins on Oct. 15 on the Columbia Campus.
Pharmacy Technician Certificate Program is a popular live-lecture medical certificate program in which students can earn a pharmacy technician certificate. This 50-hour course begins Saturday, Oct. 6 at the Williamson County campus, Monday, Oct. 8 at the Lawrenceburg campus, and Tuesday, Oct. 9 at the Columbia campus.
Basic Life Support for the Health Care Provider is a seven-hour course that reviews basic life support and airway obstruction. Students will be working with mannequins to practice and perfect skills. The class will be at the Franklin campus on Saturday, Oct. 27.
ACT Test Prep class reviews math word problems, algebraic expressions and geometric concepts that will be on the most important test high school students will take. Students will practice reading for comprehension and review basic grammar rules, along with timed practice tests. The five-week class will meet once a week on the Columbia campus beginning Monday, Oct. 29 This course is designed for new test takers and test repeaters who desire to improve their scores. Course fee of $125 includes all books and materials.
Hospice training is available in three parts, beginning this October. All three hospice classes are free and open to the public. Registration is not required, but call ahead to verify time and location.
· Living with Hospice - Part I: You will discuss the history of hospice care and identify some myths surrounding hospice care. Hear discussions on the challenges of patients and families in hospice care, and receive information on eligibility for this program. Part I is on Tuesday, Oct. 23.
· Living with Hospice - Part II: Discuss the qualities of pain and symptom management, identify the signs and symptoms of approaching death, identify psychological needs for dying patients and their families, and discuss the importance of advance care planning. Part II is on Tuesday, Oct. 30.

· Living with Hospice - Part III: Discuss the difference between religious and spiritual aspects of end of life care, the importance of psychological and spiritual issues for dying patients and their families. This class will describe the role of the volunteer coordinator, volunteers in hospice care and requirements for becoming a volunteer and the bereavement program offered and the difference between pre-bereavement and bereavement. Part III is on Tuesday, Nov. 13
