C-STATE HOSTS LECTURE: "LINCOLN: THE CONSTITUTION AND THE PROBLEM OF SECESSION"

Lecture Free and Open to the Public on Oct. 3

(COLUMBIA, Tenn. - September 28, 2011) - - - Columbia State Community College will host guest lecturer, Dr. Charles M. Hubbard who will discuss "Lincoln: The Constitution and the Problem of Secession," on Monday, Oct. 3 at 6:30 p.m. in room 120 of the Waymon L. Hickman building on the Columbia campus. This event is free and open to the public.

Hubbard currently serves as the executive director of the Abraham Lincoln Institute for the Study of Leadership and Public Policy at the Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) in Harrogate, Tenn. His lecture is being featured as part of the six-week traveling exhibition, "Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War," that is currently on display through Oct. 28 in the John W. Finney Memorial Library located on the Columbia campus.

Hubbard, a distinguished Lincoln scholar, served as the director of the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum for 12 years. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Mercer University, his Master of Arts in history from Middle Tennessee State University and his PhD. from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, where he specialized in the diplomatic history of the Civil War era. During his career, Hubbard has received many awards, honors and grants for his work, including the Lincoln Diploma of Honor and the Lincoln Award for Outstanding Professional Achievement. In addition, Hubbard has published five books, including his most recent, Lincoln and the Struggle for Command.

The National Constitution Center and the American Library Association Public Programs Office organized the traveling exhibition, which was made possible by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH): great ideas brought to life. The traveling exhibition is based on the same name developed by the National Constitution Center.
