I Support Columbia State Archive

“ …of the opportunities it gives those who would not otherwise have an affordable education that both young students and adults seeking to improve their lives can attain. Columbia State also provides local athletic and cultural events to enrich the community. The Pryor Art Gallery and Cherry Theater are beautiful venues not found in most small towns. Columbia State is close to my heart because a two-year college was a very important step in my life. I have seen that same impact here. The College supplies the region with well-prepared employees for in-demand jobs. Students who choose to go on to four-year colleges are equally prepared. The future Center for Health Sciences and Industrial Technologies building on the Columbia campus will even further the College’s importance.”
Con Vrailas, retired businessman, first became involved in Columbia State when his daughter was a student at the College. He served six total terms on the Foundation Board, beginning in 2004.

“……of the educational opportunities the College provides to students during all phases of life. The quest for a degree becomes manageable through the expertise and support of the administration, professors, and staff from the first time a student walks onto the campus and throughout the continuum until the final steps at graduation. Serving on the Foundation Board of Trustees is a privilege, to give back in a small way for the life changing skills that my degree from Columbia State gave to me for which I am most grateful. As a Board member, I also see firsthand the College in action for students and the community as a whole.”
Dana Salters, Administrative Director of Oncology Services at Maury Regional Medical Center, is a Columbia native and a proud Columbia State alumnus. She served two terms on the Foundation Board from 2016- 2022.

" …it is absolutely invaluable to the community. There are so many students, including those that will be the first in their family to graduate from college, that may not have that opportunity without the accessibility of community college. Columbia State produces high quality graduates who welcome the chance to work in their home communities. With Columbia State's knowledge of the community and understanding of its long-range needs, along with its flexibility to work with employers on creating new programs, the area will continue to benefit from a well-trained, qualified workforce.
Darlene Baxter, retired vice president at Maury Regional Medical Center, worked closely with Columbia State students that were employed at the hospital after graduation. As a longtime Foundation Board member beginning in 1998, she worked diligently to provide scholarships to students who would have a difficult time attending Columbia State without additional financial assistance. Darlene served as Board Chair from 2019-2021.

“ …the quality education and job training the College provides at an affordable price. When the Clifton campus opened, we were so excited to have a college in Wayne County. Columbia State offers rural areas opportunities that prepare students for their future, which may not otherwise be available. The Foundation Board is a group of strong community leaders with Columbia State at heart, and I am proud to continue to serve as an ambassador for the Board.”
Jason Rich, former Wayne County Mayor, served two terms on the Foundation Board from 2014-2020. His wife Stacey is a Columbia State alum.

“…of the importance of the College to the community; not just for students who want an alternative to a four-year school, but also for single parents and other adults looking for an opportunity to better themselves. In my time working with the Foundation, I am proud of the scholarship money we have raised and the work we have done to give back to the community, and I am grateful for the lasting friendships gained. I am excited for the continued growth of the College, particularly with the new building in Lawrenceburg which I expect will have the same impact that the Williamson campus has had. I hope to help to contribute to that growth with continued involvement with the College beyond my term as a Foundation Board member.”
Kirk Kelso, Executive Vice President of Lewisburg Printing Company, first became involved with the Foundation as a committee member for the J.R. Moon Golf Classic, which benefits Marshall County students through scholarships and support of the Columbia State Lewisburg Campus. “…the incredible impact the College has on its entire nine county service area, and beyond. I was first introduced to Columbia State through connections that were involved with the Foundation Board. The more I learned about the College's mission and what it means to all types of students from diverse backgrounds, it made it easy to say, "yes" when I was asked to serve as a Trustee myself. As I share the Columbia State message to individuals, businesses, and organizations throughout the community, I continually meet people who express that Columbia State has been an important part of their education. With support from the state to construct new facilities, I am certain the forward-thinking leadership at Columbia State will bring on new and expand existing programs that make sense now and in the future. I am humbled and honored to be a part of Columbia State.”
Mike Alexander, owner of Signs First Franklin, served on the Foundation Board from 2017-2023 and served as Board Chair.

“ …it gives adults of all ages the opportunity to achieve their goals. Anyone who wishes to begin or continue higher education has that chance at Columbia State. The College enhances the educational level of our local workforce, it is a major contributor to economic development, and it improves the quality of life in our community. I am very proud of our campus in Franklin. We are most fortunate to benefit from the leadership of Dr. Janet Smith as well as the many contributions of faculty, staff, and supporters. It is a privilege to believe in Columbia State Community College. Columbia State’s tomorrow will provide endless possibilities.”
Nancy Conway, Senior Vice President of Community Relations at Williamson, Inc., first became involved in Columbia State in the 1980s as she saw a continued need for expanded College services in Williamson County. Nancy served multiple terms on the Foundation Board, beginning in 1979.
