Women, the Gothic & Fantastic in 18th & 19th Century Literature

Professor Jessica Evans explores the relationship between feminism and elements of the fantastic in the new literature that emerged in the eighteenth and nineteenth century. This new sensibility provided a deeper insight into women’s minds and their unique ways of seeing the world. Their quietly revolutionary writing changed the way gender was seen and gothic elements coded this new relationship to a world previously shaped by patriarchy.
