Dr. Heather Brown
“Emerging Trends and Current Technology in Concrete”
Come and hear about the second most consumed material in the world. You don't drink it, eat it, wear it or text on it but it is vital to your existence. The basic recipe of concrete has stood the test of time but the advances it has made in the last 10 years has been remarkable. America has taken concrete to a new level with projects like the Freedom Tower and Hoover Dam bridge. This technology is to be shared all over the world as we learn from each other how to build smarter, safer and greener.
Dr. Heather J. Brown joined the Concrete Industry Management Program (CIM) in August 2001 and is currently Department Chair and Professor of the newly formed School of Concrete and Construction Management at Middle Tennessee State University. Dr. Brown’s technical experience includes five years of material testing and research for the Tennessee Department of Transportation. She has authored and co-authored over 30 papers and been published in Concrete International, ASTM Journal of Testing and Evaluation, Transportation Research Record, International Center for Aggregate Research Journal, American Chemical Society Journal and Tennessee Concrete. She has been a presenter and guest lecturer on topics such as factors affecting concrete strength, pervious pavements, fiber reinforced concrete, whitetopping pavements, high performance concrete, excavatable flowable fill, skid resistant aggregates, and concrete tolerances. Dr. Brown has been awarded a recipient of CBAS Outstanding Grantsmanship, CBAS Overall Excellence, MTSU Faculty Who Make a Difference, and recognized as an influential Women in Business in Rutherford County in 2015.
Her teaching efforts at MTSU extend to multiple concrete courses relating to concrete testing, concrete construction methods, concrete applications, troubleshooting concrete, surveying, reinforced concrete design, advanced mix designs and senior concrete lab. She is very active with student organizations as faculty advisor for American Concrete Institute (ACI), and Associated General Contractors (AGC). She also spends time as coordinator for volunteer concrete projects performed by the students for the community.
Dr. Brown’s academic preparation includes a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Master of Science in Civil Engineering, and PhD in Civil Engineering all from Tennessee Technological University.
Heather J. Brown resides in Lascassas, TN with her husband J. Chris Brown who is a Mechanical Engineer for Nissan North America and their sons, Mason and Wyatt Brown.
