What Classes Can I Take?

What classes can I take?

Dual enrolling students are not limited to a given list of courses. Like any college student, dual enrolling students can take whatever course(s) they qualify for.

  • The majority of dual enrolling students take “general education courses”, like English, History, Math, Psychology, and /or Fine Arts, as they are classes needed for almost all bachelor’s degrees.
  • The goal is that a student’s first taste of college be a positive experience, so a student’s strengths and weaknesses should be considered when choosing a course.

Many courses require students meet specific prerequisites, such as a preliminary course, or a required ACT/SAT or other appropriate placement score to be eligible to register for the course. Below are two helpful charts,

If a student has not yet taken the ACT, the student can take a Compass test, or at least the portion of the test that is required for the given course. The Compass test is an untimed, computer based test similar to the ACT, as it is given in several parts; reading, math and writing. Once a student has submitted application and been accepted to the college, the Compass test can be scheduled. To schedule a test at the campus closest to you, contact Columbia State’s Office of Testing Services, 931-540-2821.

Advising for dual enrolled students begins and ends with the high school counselor or umbrella program. The high school guidance counselor or umbrella program will need to clarify the school’s policy regarding dual credit options.
