Vocabulary

  • "A" Number: Every student is issued an "A Number" when you apply. That number is your identification code. Keep it PRIVATE! When contacting offices on campus, please have this number ready so that staff members can more easily access your records.
  • Chargers: The Columbia State mascot. 
  • ChargerNet: A portal for students, faculty and staff to access account information, register and pay for classes, check email and more!
  • Columbia State Online Courses: Columbia State faculty plan and teach these classes completely online.
  • Conventional Methodology: Your class is in a regular classroom on one of the campuses.
  • Dual Enrollment: High school students have the opportunity to take college classes while still in high school. Students can take classes offered at their high school, online or at one of Columbia State's five campuses. In some cases, a course may count toward high school graduation requirements AND will transfer directly as earned college credit. This is a great way to get a head start on college!
  • E-Campus: All the types of classes that include web-based content.
  • FAFSA: The MOST important form for a college student! The Free Application for Federal Student Aid has to be filled out every single year. You will fill it out as soon after January 1st as you can. This form is required for federal grants and loans and even the Hope Scholarship. It is NOT required for the Dual Enrollment Grant!
  • Hybrid Classes: A hybrid class has both traditional classroom and online components.
  • Hybrid Accelerated Classes: These courses usually meet only 5 to 7 weeks.
  • Independent Study: These courses usually have no regular class meetings.
  • Interactive Television (ITV): Classes that are held in dynamic classrooms. Your professor may be teaching at another campus, but they can see and hear you and you can see and hear them. Most ITV classes will have students attending from each of the five campuses. Sometimes these classes are called "2-Way Video & Audio."
  • President's Leadership Society (PLS): The President's Leadership Society is a unique and FABULOUS way to be involved with the college, strengthen your leadership skills, give back to the community and to build your professional resume. Anyone is welcome to apply!
  • Provost: A Provost is the highest academic leader in a college or university.
  • Phi Theta Kappa (PTK): Columbia State's honor society.
  • Regents Online Degree Program (RODP): The Tennessee Board of Regents has created a virtual classroom where students from all over Tennessee (and even outside of the state) can enroll together. These courses may use a faculty member from a college or university outside of Columbia State.
  • Web Enhanced Classes: Many professors place discussions, notes, and reading assignments online to go with your classroom experience.
