Transfer Planning

College transfer students can take the freshman and sophomore-level courses at Columbia State, transfer the courses to a senior institution, and then complete the junior and senior years at the university. Students should follow the transfer guide designed specifically for the major and the institution in which they intend to enroll.

It’s never too early to begin planning for a smooth transfer to another institution. The longer you wait to make a decision, the more you risk delaying degree completion. All students are advised to speak with an academic advisor before enrolling in classes.

Our advisors will help you to select a program of study, identify schools and understand the transfer requirements for the degree program at your school of choice. In addition, they'll let you know which Columbia State courses will transfer and help you to create a schedule based on those courses. To ensure a successful transfer:

Four Semesters Before Transferring

1. Speak to your Columbia State academic advisor as soon as possible to assist you with choosing your major.
2. Learn about general education requirements and lower-division components in the curriculum at institutions you are considering.
3. Use a transfer guide to assist you with course selection.                                                                                                                                                                          4. Start your math (based on your program of study), and writing (composition) sequences as early as possible, as they are common requirements across most programs.

Three Semesters Before Transferring

1. Continue working with your Columbia State academic advisor.
2. Decide which transfer institution best suits your needs and schedule a campus visit.
3. Begin looking for scholarships and other ways to meet costs.
4. Familiarize yourself with your future institution’s academic calendar and deadlines.

Two Semesters Before Transferring

1. Continue selecting courses that transfer appropriately within your program of study.
2. Submit an Intent to Graduate with Columbia State.  Students are highly encouraged to  complete a degree before transfering to a 4-year school to be eligible for the benefits that the transfer path provides
3. Submit your university admission application, financial aid application and all official transcripts to the colleges to which you hope to transfer.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      4. Once admitted, complete any specific scholarship and housing applications as appropriate.

One Semester Before Transferring

1. Complete transferable coursework in your program.                                                                                                                                                                                  2.  Consult the university transfer advisor for any additional transfer information.
