(COLUMBIA, Tenn. – June 18, 2012) - - - Columbia State Community College’s Charger Sunshine Relay for Life team has reached the jade level of giving with the American Cancer Society by reaching a team-record $11,539.85 this year.
The team, comprised of students, faculty, staff and alumni, sold over 500 Relay for Life t-shirts in its fundraising efforts and walked away with the Best Team Spirit award at the June 1 event after part of the team spent the night at the relay starting point in pep rally mode. The Charger Sunshine Relay for Life team also took second place for Best Team Food award when they cranked out homemade ice cream.
Team co-captains Kaye Richards, Columbia State staff and alum and Victoria Gay, Columbia State faculty, readily acknowledge that the team came together quickly on the Columbia State campus.
“This is an event that we look forward to each year,” Richards said. “We’ve had an outpouring of support from students, faculty and staff.”
“This is a cause that has touched nearly all of us. We are really happy to have been a part of the event this year,” said Gay, who walked 27.5 miles during the evening.
“We have a lot of people who have helped us raise funds,” Gay continued, “but the hardest working fundraiser has been Aubrey Flagg, a professor of geography at the college, who has made raising funds to help with cancer research his calling.”
