COLUMBIA STATE OFFERS NON-CREDIT COURSES IN NOVEMBER
Computer, SPC Training, Leadership, Hospice, Online Classes Available

Columbia State Community College’s Center for Economic and Workforce Development is offering a variety of non-credit courses and programs throughout the month of November online and at the Columbia campus. Programs and courses include Living with Hospice, Online Medical Coding and Introduction to Excel.
 
Statistical Process Control (SPC) Introduction teaches the student how to improve the quality of a product or service. The class also helps the student understand when/how often to make adjustments to your processes to improve quality. The class will help foster a better understanding of the basic principles of SPC, such as causes of variation; frequency histograms and check sheets; variable control charts; attribute control charts; machine and process capability; and quality problem-solving tools. This class will be held at the Lewisburg campus Tuesdays, Nov. 1, 8 and 15. The fee for the class is $139.
 
Living with Hospice Part 2 is a class in which students will discuss the qualities of pain and symptom management, identify the signs and symptoms of approaching death, identify psychological needs for dying patients and their families, and discuss the importance of advance care planning. The class is free and open to the public, and it will be on Thursday, Nov. 3 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Registration is not required.
 
Introduction to Excel 2010 teaches the student to sort and analyze data, design custom charts and graphs, and format worksheets using mathematical formulas.  Get started with Excel 2010 by attending this class. The course will be Friday, Nov. 4 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The $129 fee includes textbook.
 
EMT Refresher is a 24-hour course that provides participants with a review and update on the care and treatment of medical-trauma emergencies. Participants completing this course will meet the refresher requirements for re-certification with the National Registry. Participants completing the course will receive 2.4 continuing education units (CEUs). The class is Nov. 7, 8 and 9 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Participants must register at least two weeks before the class. The $140 fee includes CEUs.
 
Online Medical Transcription is a course offered through a partnership with Oak Horizons. The program consists of six consecutive blocks and will take six weeks to complete. Students will complete 950 cumulative hours of study during the program. Oak Horizons regularly networks with various employers to document skill needs and program value. Medical transcription is a healthcare profession that is in great need of knowledgeable and skilled professionals. This class begins Monday, Nov. 7. The $1,999 fee does not include textbooks.
 
Living with Hospice Part 3 is a class in which students will discuss the difference between religious and spiritual aspects of end-of-life care, as well as the importance of psychological and spiritual issues for dying patients and their families. This class describes the role of the volunteer coordinator, volunteers in hospice care and requirements for becoming a volunteer, and the bereavement program offered and the difference between pre-bereavement and bereavement. The class takes place Thursday, Nov. 10 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. This class is free and open to the public, and registration is not required.
 
The OSHA 10-Hour Voluntary Compliance Course will train the employer how to keep your employees safe and your facility in compliance with OSHA. To do so, you can send representatives to this program which includes a review of OSHA standards, information on inspections, citations, penalties and most cited violations. The training also includes Subpart H-hazardous materials; Subpart S-electrical; Subpart O-machine guarding I and lockout/tagout; Subpart D-walking and working surfaces; and Subpart E-Route of exit and hazard communication. The instructor, Wilder Allen, is one of the leading safety experts in the nation. If you need more detailed information, or to register, call (931)540-1121. The $360 course fee covers all course materials, CEUs, 10 hours of instruction, PowerPoint programs to assist you with your training, a certificate of completion and an official course completion card from the U.S. Department of Labor and OSHA. The training will be Thursday, Nov. 10 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday, Nov. 11 from 8 a.m. to noon.
 
Introduction to Excel 2007 teaches the student how to get started with Excel 2007 and work with formulas and functions. This class will be at the Columbia campus on Friday, Nov. 11 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The $129 course fee includes textbook.
 
Setting Performance Expectations is a class offered in conjunction with the Leadership series. This class helps leaders ensure mutual understanding of performance expectations; help others identify performance expectations that align with the organization's goals; gain individual or team commitment to fulfilling the expectations in the performance plan; and handle challenging situations that can arise during setting-expectations discussions. This class will be Wednesday, Nov. 16 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The $149 fee includes textbook.
 
Intermediate Excel 2010 helps students learn how to use multiple worksheets and workbooks efficiently, and they will start working with more advanced formatting options, including styles, themes and backgrounds. They will also learn how to create outlines and subtotals, how to create and apply cell names, and how to work with tables. This course also covers advanced charting techniques, use of trend lines and spark lines, worksheet auditing and protection, file sharing and merging, and workbook templates, pivot tables and charts. The class will be on Friday, Nov. 18 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The $129 fee includes textbook.
