Daily Herald Icon Recognized in Form of Scholarship Endowment
Al Clark Broadcasting, Richard Young and The Daily Herald Newspaper in Columbia, TN have joined forces to raise funds for the creation of the Marion Wilhoite Endowment for Excellence in Sports Journalism at Columbia State Community College.
Once established, the endowment will provide an annual award to a Columbia State student who embodies the values practiced by Marion Wilhoite during his 50 years of reporting, coaching and organizing sports in Columbia and across the State of Tennessee. Wilhoite has been the sports editor at The Daily Herald since 1962, and his life as a sportswriter is a testament to his desire to be the best at what he loves to do the most.
“We are asking for donations of any amount to establish this endowment fund,” said Greg Lewis, interim director for advancement at Columbia State. “Patrons who donate $50 or more to the Marion Wilhoite Endowment for Excellence in Sports Journalism will receive a gift from the Columbia State Foundation – a limited edition DVD chronicling the life and career of Marion Wilhoite.”
“Marion: A Sportswriter’s Legend – The Marion Wilhoite Story,” covers the life and times of Wilhoite as told in his own words, with photos and commentary from friends and colleagues. The DVD was created by Al Clark Productions, in association with TMT Productions and Village Media.
“This video is a ‘blessing,’ as Marion calls it, from the beginning,” said Clark – who also narrates the movie. “There was a moment when I asked him about what his career as a sportswriter and his singularity of purpose said about him and our society. His response caused tears in my eyes, as I am sure it will to yours.”
