1. What can I do with a major in political science? 

The field of political science can open many doors.  Some political science majors go on to law school.  Some go into teaching.  A major in political science requires a liberal arts education.  This can open many doors into the business field.  Some political science majors go into law enforcement.  Some political science majors get involved in elections, other get involved in government.

2. Will all of my classes transfer to another institution?

Each institution is unique in their program requirements?  The general education curriculum offered at Columbia State is designed to transfer to most schools.  Speak with your advisor regarding the courses you have taken and courses required at your chosen four year institution.

3. What political science classes will I have to take at Columbia State as a pre political science major? 

As of the spring of 2005 we offer three political science classes.  Essentials of American Government, Introduction to Political Science and State and Local Government.  All of these are required classes.  In the spring of 2006 we will offer a new class, Introduction to Comparative Government.

4. How do I declare a major in political science at Columbia State? 

When you enroll at Columbia State, you will have an opportunity to declare a major.  If you have already declared a major and would like to change your major to political science, you should fill out a Change of Major form.

5. Do I have to take a foreign language to graduate with a concentration in political science at Columbia State? 

If the degree program you are entering at a four year university requires a language, it may be in your best interests to take a foreign language while at Columbia State.  An Associate of Science degree from Columbia State does not require foreign language course work.

6. Will I be able to get a job in the field of political science?

Political science is a discipline.  With a degree in political science you will have a liberal education.  This means you will have taken courses in many different areas.  These classes will give you a good foundation to present your credentials and qualifications in the business world, law school or graduate school.

7.  Do I have to be a political science major to go to law school? 

No. Most of the people who are admitted into law school are political science majors.  However, there are people admitted into law school that at music majors, business majors, biology majors and other fields of study.

8.Will I need an advanced degree to get a good job in political science? 

If you want to teach on the college level, you will need at least a master's degree.  Most 4 year institutions will require a doctorate degree.  In the field of business a bachelor's degree will be adequate in many cases.  If you want to get into politics or work for government most of the time a bachelor's degree will be adequate. 

9. What courses should I take for the social science electives as a political science major? 

You may choose your social science electives from the following departments: economics, geography, history, psychology, sociology.  Your advisor can help you on the specific classes based upon your interests, educational objectives and professional goals.
