What is SMARTHINKING?

Columbia State Community College has purchased online tutoring services from SMARTHINKING, and is making it available at no cost to currently enrolled students .

Students connect to live tutors from any computer that has Internet access. SMARTHINKING is a virtual learning assistance center providing online tutoring 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  It also have an online writing lab where e-structors critique and return essays within 24 hours.

How do I get a username and password to use SMARTHINKING?

You must first go to the Teaching and Learning Center to receive your temporary username and password or contact any member of the staff listed below.  You will be prompted to enter your personal information and create a permanent username and password.  Accounts are good for one year beginning September 1, 2011 and will expire August 31, 2012 or until all purchased hours have been used.

How do students and e-structors interact?

Students work in real-time with an e-structor, submit questions or essays for a next day response, or pre-schedule online appointments. Students communicate with e-structors using a virtual whiteboard technology. Scientific and mathematical notation, symbols, geometric figures, graphing and freehand drawing can be rendered quickly and easily.

Which subjects have tutors?

SMARTHINKING provides tutoring in Mathematics (Basic Math through Calculus II), Writing, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Accounting, Economics, Spanish and Statistics. Math tutors are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week during the school year. Over 80% of SMARTHINKING tutors have a Masters or PhD in their respective discipline, and average eight years of teaching experience. Students can:

  • "Drop-in" for live tutoring
  • Submit questions for a response within 24 hours
  • Pre-schedule sessions
  • View archives of past sessions
