PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT COURSES ON SCHEDULE FOR MONTH OF AUGUST

(COLUMBIA, Tenn. – July 19, 2012) - - - Whether you’re looking to learn new skills or fine-tune your current ones, Columbia State Community College has something for everyone. Columbia State’s Center for Economic and Workforce Development is offering a variety of classes during the month of August.

Learn how to sort and analyze data, design custom charts and graphs, and format worksheets using mathematical formulas when you attend Introduction to Excel 2010. The one-day class is Friday, Aug. 3.

Getting Started as a New Leader is the first class in a series of leadership courses that teaches you how to quickly and effectively achieve results in your new role as a leader; focus your time and effort on high-priority tasks; effectively lead your teams to contribute to an organization's business strategies; and achieve results through others by building strong relationships with team members. The class takes place on the Columbia campus Wednesday, Aug. 8.

The Intermediate Quickbooks 2010class includes banking and billing activities, working with reports and budgets, and protecting and backing up data. The class takes place on the Columbia campus Friday, Aug. 10.

Take Introduction to Strategic Planning,and learn how vision and mission are important in strategic planning. Learn how to conduct a basic SWOT analysis; how and why consensus building is important in planning; how to identify metrics for measuring progress; and why it is important to identify obstacles and set plans for overcoming them. This class takes place Monday, Aug. 13.

Lean Basics training gives today’s businesses a competitive advantage that separates surviving companies from dominating ones in competitive, rapidly growing markets. Lean principles apply adaptability and flexibility toward solving problems, streamlining processes, eliminating waste and saving money in any environment. This class is one in a three-course Lean curriculum that will provide you the knowledge of Lean principles, methodologies and concepts so you can instantly acquire applicable skills that can benefit both your company and your career. The three-day class is Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 14-16. Anyone who completes all three courses will receive a certificate of completion.

First Line Supervision was created for first-line foremen and experienced foremen. Based on AMA materials, participants will learn how to effectively make the transition to the role of supervisor and how to communicate more effectively, both individually and while conducting meetings. Learn people-development techniques, people management, performance feedback and team-building ideas and techniques. Participants will also learn how to motivate employees and how to supervise in a diverse work environment. The one-day class is Friday, Aug. 17.

Managing Change Effectively teaches thateffective implementation of change can be a major challenge for organizations. Why is it so difficult, and why do so many change efforts wind up as failures? This course helps those attending to better understand the change cycle, what is normal that we should expect, and how to build support for change. The class is on Friday, Aug. 31. Participants earn CEUs and a certificate of completion.
