COLUMBIA STATE WELCOMES CLASSICAL PIANIST CHRISTINE WHELCHEL

Valentine’s Day Performance Free and Open to the Public

(COLUMBIA, Tenn. – Feb. 6, 2012) - - -    Romance is the tone of the Valentine’s Day classical piano recital with guest pianist Christine Whelchel. The 3:30 p.m. performance scheduled for the Cherry Theater in the Waymon L. Hickman building of Columbia State’s main campus combines the masters of J.S. Bach, Rachmaninoff, Debussy, Mozart, Liszt and Poulenc in the capable hands of Christine Whelchel.

Whelchel earned her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts from the University of Memphis, where she studied under Dr. Daniel Fletcher. She has accompanied the Toscanini Choir Ensemble and served as the pianist for the First Assembly of God church. Teaching both piano and violin since 1992, Welchel has been the organist and choir director at Redeemer Lutheran church in Nashville since 2003.

Assistant Professor of Music Emily Gaskill said the public is invited to this free concert, which is sponsored by the Lyceum Committee. “Ms. Whelchel is a talented performer. Her selection of music will introduce some of the greatest classical piano music covering Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods.”
