COLUMBIA STATE OFFERS PHLEBOTOMY TECHNICIAN PROGRAM IN OCTOBER: LAWRENCEBURG

Program Offered on the Lawrenceburg Campus

(COLUMBIA, Tenn. – Sept. 30, 2011) - - - Columbia State Community College’s Center for Economic and Workforce Development is offering a Phlebotomy Technician course beginning Oct. 11 at its Lawrenceburg campus.

“We are really excited about offering some new non-credit healthcare classes such as Phlebotomy Technician,” said Ron Beck, director of economic and workforce development at Columbia State. “Not only have there been requests for this class, but the class helps prepare students for a certification exam.”

The phlebotomist, whose main function is to obtain patient’s blood specimens by venipuncture and microcollection, is a vital member of the clinical laboratory team. This field has greatly expanded in the past several years, and this integral member of the health care team is in demand. Phlebotomists are employed throughout the health care system in hospitals, neighborhood health centers, medical group practices, HMOs, public health facilities, insurance carriers and other health care settings. The 90-hour course will meet from Oct. 11 to Dec. 15 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-9:30 p.m. and Saturdays, Oct. 29, Nov. 12, and Dec. 10, from 9 a.m. to 3p.m. The $1,599 fee includes all textbooks and materials needed for the course.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, phlebotomists earn between $23,000 and $35,000 annually, but they can earn up to $53,000, depending on education, experience and industry. It is expected that the industry will see a 14 percent growth in employment by 2018.
