MUSIC - Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What do graduates do with a degree in music? One of the great things about a music major is the great diversity in which area of emphasis the student chooses. For example, in performance the student can specialize in his or her individual instrument or voice. A career in performance can range anywhere from becoming an opera singer to playing sessions in a recording studio, or performing in an orchestra. Students may also want to choose a major that allows them to work as either a band or choral director in the public school system. There are also many academic routes of study that would qualify the student to teach at a university or publish. Last but not least, there are many areas of emphasis in the music major that prepare the student for a career in commercial music, theatre or even television and movies.
  2. Do students have to be a music major to take private lessons? Yes. The reason being that there are only a limited number of instructors to teach individual lessons. Even at universities with large music departments with many members on the music faculty, instructors will only take so many students and those that are allowed to study must be declared music majors.
  3. What kind of certification is required  to teach music? In the public school system students take courses to qualify them for K-12 certification. However students are often surprised that at universities and other institutions of higher learning no special certification is required. For those positions other professional criteria are taken into consideration for that career path.
