Franklin campus students Lucy Sparrow, Mercedes McGee, Melissa Fellers, Michael Schieck and Brad Glover raised money for Tennessee tornado victims from Fairview. A guitar autographed by several Country Music stars (including Wynonna Judd, The Fox Brothers and Larry Strickland), gift cards to Subway and Cracker Barrel, and other items were randomly given out to donors as a thank-you at the conclusion of the campaign March 26. The mayors of Williamson County and Fairview were present to accept the funds.
Lady Chargers Head Coach Nicole Lockridge was named Western Division Conference and Tennessee Junior and Community College Athletic Association (TJCCAA) Coach of the Year in her fourth season as head coach. Chargers 6'4" Sophomore Marrio Hunter and 6’5” freshman Dontavious Merriweather were each named to the men’s TJCCAA All-Western Conference Team. Hunter received additional honors, being named to the All-TJCCAA Team. Lady Chargers freshman Taylor Fayette and DeBrisha Robinson were both named to the TJCCAA All-Western Conference Team as well. Robinson was also named to the All-TJCCAA team. The Lady Chargers finished second in Western Division behind Southwest who was undefeated in the regular season, while the Chargers men’s team finished the season with an 8-18 record. “Despite the slow start and the plaguing injuries, both teams finished the season strong,” said Louis Conner, Columbia State’s athletic director.

Dr. Janet Smith, Columbia State's new president, has been touring the campuses since her Feburary 18 arrival, meeting with students a staff. The schedule of visits includes Lawrenceburg on February 27, Lewisburg on February 29, Clifton on March 6, and Franklin on March 10. Smith had been president of Rich Mountain Community College in Mena, Arkansas since July 2000. She holds a B.S. in Health and Physical Education from Austin Peay State University, an M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction from APSU, and a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration from Vanderbilt University.
The 2007-2008 Performance Series continues with a return visit from Chamber Orchestra Kremlin on Thursday, March 13 at 7 p.m. in the Cherry Theater. Chamber Orchestra Kremlin is comprised of Russia’s finest young string players. Founded in 1991 and led by Misha Rachlevsky, the Chamber has earned national and international recognition as one of Russia’s leading ensembles. Tickets to the performance are $15 for the general public and $10 for students. Hickman, Columbia State Community College Foundation board member “I first heard the group perform in 1992 while in Russia and last year’s mesmerizing performance brought back fond memories of that performance.”
About eight months ago, Columbia resident Melissa Lavitte and her husband Justin found themselves in a quandary. She was expecting their first child and wanted to stay home with the baby. At the same time, she wanted to continue to work. She found a solution at Columbia State Community College by taking training in Medical Transcription. Would you like to have a similar success story? A complimentary information session will be held on Tuesday, March 18 from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. in the Hickman Building, Room 122, on the Columbia Campus. Paul Christopher, an accomplished cellist and an assistant professor of music, will perform classical music March 18 at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m., and on March 19 at 11 a.m. The performances are complimentary and open to the public and sponsored by the Tennessee Arts Commission and Columbia State Lyceum group. All three events will be held in the Cherry Theater on the Columbia campus. In addition to his teaching duties at Northwestern State University, Christopher is a member of several orchestras. He has also appeared on numerous recordings as a member of the Nashville String Machine with artists such as Faith Hill, Ricky Skaggs, Bruce Springsteen and George Strait.
