Columbia State will host a Financial Aid Evening on February 26 from 3 to 7 p.m. in the Jones Student Center on the Columbia campus. The complimentary event is designed to assist any and all students who are planning to attend Columbia State during the fall 2008 semester, to apply and prepare for receiving financial aid. Columbia State financial aid experts will be on hand to assist students and parents in filling out and submitting FAFSA and other financial aid paperwork. Both student and parent (if dependent) need to obtain a personal identification number PIN, available at www.pin.ed.gov, and also bring copies of student/spouse or student/parent (if dependent) 2007 tax returns and W-2’s, social security card and driver’s license.

Columbia State has hired Middle Tennessee film industry veteran Read Ridley to launch the new Film Crew Technology classes in the Commercial Entertainment Program at the Franklin Campus. The courses fill a void in entertainment education, teaching students the necessary skills to work as a crew technician in film and video. Prospective students should apply for enrollment now for mid-summer courses beginning in July.

Students will recreate 1940s radio serials with a presentation of five popular shows February 20-22. There will be guest hosts, live sound effects, and actors acting out the shows live on stage. Friday, Feb. 22 at 2 p.m. is the final performance, featuring Flash Gordon and Archie Andrews

A reception welcoming Dr. Janet Smith, Columbia State Community College’s fourth president, is scheduled for Monday, February 18 from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. The come-and-go affair will be held in the Jones Student Center on the Columbia campus. The Tennessee Board of Regents unanimously approved Smith as the new president of Columbia State on November 30. Smith has been president of Rich Mountain Community College in Mena, Arkansas since July 2000. Smith holds a B.S. in Health and Physical Education from Austin Peay State University, an M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction from APSU, and a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration from Vanderbilt University.

Columbia State alumnus Tim Webb was named Interim Commissioner of Education by Governor Bredesen. He will be acting commissioner until a permanent replacement is named. Dr. Webb joined the department in 2003 and is the deputy commissioner.

The 2008 Homecoming King and Queen -- communication freshman Cameron Deron Russell and nursing sophomore Nekeia Booker-- were crowned at the basketball game halftime February 2. The remaining Homecoming Court was comprised of history sophomore John Dylan Atkins, general transfer sophomore Ronald Rickard, general studies sophomore Kelley Savannah Faulkner, mass communication freshman ShaMeeka Parrish. The basketball games were closely matched, ending with the Lady Chargers edging out Jackson State 80-69, and a narrow Chargers defeat of 83-74.

College Goal Sunday, an event that provides assistance with the financial aid process, is on Sunday, February 10 from 2-4 p.m. in the Jones Student Center on the Columbia campus. Students and parents that are even remotely thinking about attending college are encouraged to attend this event.
