The Pryor Art Gallery is showcasing the work of Gloria Newton from October 2-31. Newton’s work is mostly two-dimensional, large-scale acrylics on canvas and wood. She also paints watercolors, using warm tones, and constructs multi-media three-dimensional pieces.

The Commercial Entertainment Program performed a 15-minute routine at the annual alumni and donor appreciation event on the Columbia campus. This year's theme was Café de Columbia, an outdoor coffee house with a portable art exhibit and live performance. Many commercial entertainment students are hired by prestigious entertainment companies soon after graduation.

President O. Rebecca Hawkins was the recent recipient of two outstanding awards: (1)The June Anderson Award for Outstanding Contributions in Promoting Equality for Women in Higher Education, presented by the Women in Higher Education in Tennessee (WHET) on October 5. The mission of WHET is to identify, develop, and provide leadership opportunities for all women in higher education in Tennessee. The June Anderson Award was established to honor the life of June S. Anderson, who was a distinguished Tennessee educator and supporter for women entering higher education. She was also the founder of the Women’s Center at MTSU. (2)The 2007 Citizen of the Year for Outstanding Achievement and Unselfish Service in the Betterment of Our Community, presented by the Columbia Civitan Club on October 11.

It's National Veterinary Technician Week! The event is celebrated annually to recognize veterinary technicians for their contributions to the animal health care team. The Columbia State chapter of NAVTA is sponsored by Mary Kirby. -- Watch the video. --

The search for president of Columbia State has been narrowed down to four finalists. Each candidate will be visiting the campus for interviews: Sheila Gunter will be on campus October 29 and 30; Galan Janeksela on October 30-31; Janet Smith October 30-31; and Rodger Bates October 31-November 1. There will be a public reception for each candidate, and members of the community and the media are welcome to attend. See the interview schedule for more information.

College basketball season has returned. The Chargers will hoop it up at home against Hiwassee on November 9 at 9 p.m. See the athletics site for this season's full schedule and team roster.

The theatre program will be performing Henrik Ibsen's Hedda Gabler in the Ledbetter Auditorium at 7 p.m. on October 18, 19, 25 and 26. There will also be afternoon matinees on October 18 at 2 p.m. and October 25 at 2 p.m. Hedda Gabler features several interesting lead roles for women, such as the maniacal and half-mad wife of a dull college professor.

In effort to support healthy living
and an active lifestyle, the Franklin campus is hosting a Halloween-themed wellness fair. Wednesday, Oct. 31, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Trick or Treat: It’s Your Health will feature music, dance, yoga, nutrition and weight loss information, and workout demonstrations.
