On Thursday, March 1, Columbia State will present not just a concert, but a production about a band, a town and the townsfolk from the past. Mr. Jack Daniel’s Original Silver Cornet Band will perform Hometown Saturday Night, a painstaking reconstruction of the actual band founded and funded by Lynchburg, Tennessee’s famous distiller, Mr. Jasper Newton “Jack” Daniel, back in 1892. The documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, will be shown on Tuesday, Feb. 27, in the Cherry Theater. The controversial film puts forth the theory that a major climate catastrophe could plague the planet in the next decade. The event is free and open to the public, sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa. Show times are 8 a.m., 10 a.m., 12:30 p. m., 2:30 p.m., 5 p.m., and 7 p.m.

Middle Tennessee experienced moderate snowfall on February 1-2, and white powder covered most Columbia State campuses. Classes were not cancelled due to acceptable travel conditions.

Both the Chargers and Lady Chargers swept Dyersburg State on Saturday, 95-78 and 79-62. Sophomores Alex Jones and Brittney Townsend were crowned Homecoming king and queen. The next home games are on February 10.

REMINDERS & ANNOUNCEMENTS:

The financial aid assistance program "College Goal Sunday" is on February 18, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Jones Student Center.

More than 350 Columbia State students achieved high grade point averages during the fall 2006 semester, and appear on the president’s and dean’s lists.

The nursing program has moved to a competitive admissions process. For more information, see the Nursing Program Admissions Procedures (PDF).

Perceptions, Columbia State's literary journal, is now accepting submissions of essays, prose, photography and art; be it graphic or traditional. Just fill out the submission form and include it with your piece. All entries must be submitted by Friday, February 23, 2007. The author of the submission must be a current Columbia State Community College student, staff member or faculty member at time of entry.

A new loan-forgiveness program in Tennessee is aimed at encouraging more nursing students to turn to teaching after graduation. The new $1.4 billion program hopes to fund the creation of 100 new nursing teachers throughout the state.
