by Amber Dougherty | Nov 03, 2017

(COLUMBIA, Tenn. – Nov. 3, 2017) - - - Columbia State Community College will host a guest recital featuring John Johns performing classical pieces from different stylistic periods, Nov. 6 at 1 p.m. in the Cherry Theater.

Johns, retired Vanderbilt University Blair School of Music professor emeritus, has played a vast amount of festivals and venues including Carnegie Hall for which he was praised by the New York Times as a “first rate performer with sure fingers and a firm technique… a sensitive instrumentalist.” In addition, Johns has been internationally acclaimed by leading guitar periodicals and journals for his recording of “John Johns Plays Bach, Bennett, Brouwer and Others.” While in Paris, Johns had the opportunity to play for French, Canadian and American governments.

"We are delighted to have such a great classical guitarist as John perform here,” said Dr. Mark Lee, Columbia State professor of music. “His programs are always filled with a wonderful variety of music from the Renaissance, through the Baroque, up to the present. In his concert, he will perform pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach and a segment devoted to Brazilian composers."

Johns holds a bachelor’s degree in music with a concentration in guitar, from the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore, Maryland. During his academic career, Johns was a scholar of famous guitar teacher Aaron Shearer.

The recital is free and open to the public and is sponsored by the Columbia State Department of Music. The Cherry Theater is in the Waymon L. Hickman Building on the Columbia Campus located at 1665 Hampshire Pike.
