Improve your Placement

Please refer to the sections below to best determine how to improve your placement. If you need help getting registered for any of these programs, please contact the Learning Support Director or the staff in the Tutoring & Learning Center.

(Please note that if you choose to work at one of our campuses, you will need to get a temporary parking permit from Student Services if you are not enrolled in classes.)

ACT TEST PREP  is designed for new test takers and test repeaters who desire to improve their scores.  This class meets once a week for 5 weeks. You will receive a total of 12.5 hours of instruction. Do your best on the ACT Test. Review math word problems, algebraic expressions and geometric concepts. Practice reading for comprehension and review basic grammar rules. Practice timed test taking. Course fee of $125 includes all books and materials.

Math students who scored below 13 on the ACT Math (or who have an equivalent COMPASS score):
  • Students whose math placement does not meet the requirements to enter Learning Support Math may work to improve their placement using MyMathTest, and you may work on it at at home or on campus in the Teaching and Learning Center (Columbia and Franklin only), in one of our computer labs, or in the library.
  •  In addition, students may contact the Tennessee Career Center in their area and receive an access code to use PLATO software that has been aligned to prepare students for the COMPASS test. PLATO can be accessed through the Internet, and you may work on it at a Tennessee Career Center, at home, or on campus in the Teaching and Learning Center (Columbia and Franklin only), in one of our computer labs, or in the library.
  • The Literacy Council of Williamson County will provide free tutoring in Math, Reading, and Writing.
  • 10-week access codes to a version of MyFoundationsLab that has been aligned to our COMPASS test may be purchased at our Williamson and Columbia bookstores or online at MyFoundationsLab using this ISBN: 205187706.
  • Take advantage of free video tutoring through Kahn Academy. Select the math tab and watch instructional videos on basic math, pre-algebra, and algebra.
  • Have fun working at Cool Math. This site offers teaching units on pre-algebra and algebra.
  • Work on beginning algebra topics at Purple Math.
  • SparkNotes offers math test assistance.
Math students who scored 17 or 18 on the ACT Math (or who have an equivalent COMPASS score):
  • Students who scored a 17 or 18 in MATH on the ACT and tested into Learning Support Math may be interested in improving their placement using MyMathTest software, and you may work on it at at home or on campus in the Teaching and Learning Center (Columbia and Franklin only), in one of our computer labs, or in the library.
  •  In addition, students may contact the Tennessee Career Center in their area and receive an access code to use PLATO software that has been aligned to prepare students for the COMPASS test.
