2nd Annual Sound of Poetry Contest

The Sound of Poetry

Columbia State Community College’s Second Annual Poetry Recitation Contest

What is it?  This is a chance for students to compete and show their love of poetry. A student will select 2 contrasting poems (one greater than 25 lines and one 25 lines or fewer) from the approved anthology—a link is listed below. The student will then perform these poems from memory before a panel of judges (who will be faculty from Columbia State).

How to enter? Email your name and the 2 poems you will be reading to bhall17@columbiastate.edu on or before Friday, April 25 (put “Sound of Poetry” in the subject bar). There is no cost to the competitor.

How is it judged? The students will be judged based upon Physical Presence, Voice and Articulation, Dramatic Appropriateness, Level of Difficulty, Evidence of Understanding, and their Overall Performance. There will be prizes for the top 3 finalists.

Where is it?  Ledbetter Auditorium (downstairs in the Clement Building on the Columbia Campus)

When is it? 6:00pm on Wednesday, April 30, 2013 (admission is free and open to the public)

What are the deadlines?  You must enter on or before Friday, April 25. There will be a rehearsal the day of the competition at 5:00pm.

Who can compete?    All currently enrolled students at Columbia State Community College (regardless of which campus you attend)

Where do I find the poems? Go to http://www.poetryoutloud.org/poems-and-performance/find-poems to find poems. Any poem in the printed Poetry Out Loud Anthology is also acceptable.

Any questions? Email bhall17@columbiastate.edu and put “Poetry Question” in the subject bar.
