I am a member of the Tennessee Chapter of the National Association of Developmental Education and secretary of the Executive Board. My interests include reading and researching topics such as the Old West, Holocaust literature, and politics.
I have always been interested in the Old West since as a child I was avid fan of Saturday morning westerns. Two of my favorite books about the Old West are A Bride Goes West by Nannie Alderson and Letters of a Woman Homesteader by Elinor P. Stewart.
A few years ago the Developmental Studies Reading Department began teaching thematic units utilizing Holocaust literature. Every year we have invited Holocaust survivors to speak to the college and the community. These presentations have been very well-received. We are currently reading Jack and Rochelle about a Jewish couple who escaped the Germans and became a part of the Polish Resistance during World War II. Basic Reading students are reading If I Should Die Before I Wake. During the summer of 2003, I was privileged to be a part of a group of Tennessee educators who visited the U.S. Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C. We toured the museum and attended educational workshops.
