Distance
Education Facts For Students
Columbia State
knows that family and work responsibilities may make it difficult
for many students to attend traditional on-campus courses or, in
some cases, students may need courses that are offered by distance
education at one of the college's locations.
All distance
education courses are clearly marked in the college's printed course
schedule. Special equipment needed for internet classes is also
identified in the course schedule.
Attendance
at scheduled orientations for distance education courses is REQUIRED.
Orientation schedules are provided in each semester's course schedule.
The purpose of the orientation is to provide students with course
materials and faculty expectations for communications and evaluation.
Internet courses
and video courses tend to have a higher drop rate and lower success
rate than interactive television and traditional classes. To best
succeed in a distance education course, students need self-discipline,
ability to independently structure and manage time, good reading
comprehension and writing ability, and computer skills for Internet
classes.
Since interaction
with instructors of distance education courses may not be "immediate,"
the courses require additional effort by students and faculty to
communicate effectively with each other.
Students in
distance education courses have the same access to support services
as all other students, including access to computer labs, learning
resource centers, advising, counseling, and administrative services
at all campus locations.
Students in
distance education classes have the right to address complaints
or grievances in the same manner as any other students, following
the Student Grievance Procedure as provided in the Student
Handbook. Complaints about technology or systems operation may
be referred to the Office of the Director of Distance Education
(931-540-2708) or walters@columbiastate.edu.
