Career Services Policy

 

 

 

 

1.0  Individual Career Planning

 

1.1 Individual career planning services will be provided to Columbia State currently enrolled students. Columbia State alumni, prospective students, faculty and staff will be served on a space available basis once currently enrolled students have been served.

 

1.2  All students requesting individual career planning services will be given an overview of the career planning process and an orientation to the resources available in the Career Resource Center.

 

1.3 Career planning assessments are administered by Career Services staff only.

 

2.0 Group Career Planning

 

2.1 Group career planning will be provided to Columbia State students based on demand by students and will be delivered as resources allow.

 

2.2 Group sessions will be offered to the student body and to specific classes and departments. Special requests will be evaluated and considered within Career Services priorities, staff availability, cost and timeliness of the request.

 

2.3 Students absent from follow-up group sessions will be responsible for collection of results or materials that were missed.

 

2.4 Off campus requests for group services will also be evaluated against Columbia State and Career Services priorities.

 

3.0 Career Resource Center

 

3.1 The Career Resource Center and all materials will be available to Columbia State students  within standard hours of operation. Materials will remain in reference until staff and equipment is added which would allow for checking out of materials.

 

3.2 The Career Resource Center will maintain a minimum of current data on career planning, career specific information, industry information, wage and salary data, and occupational trends. It will also house information on job search, resume writing, interviewing, salary negotiation and general job search techniques. Materials will periodically be evaluated for accuracy and usefulness.

 

3.3 Currently enrolled students will be given priority access to the Career Resource Center.

 

4.0 Job Search Assistance

 

4.1 Part-time and full-time jobs listed with career services will be posted for 30 days unless otherwise notified by the employer.

 

4.2 All jobs and internships revealed to faculty/staff should be forwarded to Career Services for posting to the general student population.

 

4.3 Postings will be entered into a web site to give students equal and timely access to job postings.

 

4.4. Job postings can be forwarded on to student groups and faculty as technology and staff support allows.

 

4.5 Only jobs that are within legal and ethical guidelines will be posted.

 

4.6 Students requesting job search assistance will be given support in the areas of resume writing, interviewing, networking, employer research, using the internet for job search and salary negotiation.

 

4.7 Job development and tracking of graduates will be performed as staff is added.

 

4.8 NACE job choices publications will be distributed annually.

 

5.0 Fee Assessment

 

5.1 No fees will be charged to currently enrolled students unless budget constraints dictate otherwise.

 

5.2 Fees for off campus services will cover all costs to Columbia State. A written request for services must be in place at least 30 days prior to the event for consideration.

 

6.0 Hours of Operation

 

6.1 Hours of operation will be in accordance with campus wide and /or student services hours. Appointments for evening services will be made on an individual basis.

 

7.0 Service to Sites and Centers

 

7.1 Service will be provided to sites and centers within the institution and division plan for providing these services.

 

7.2 Students can access resources via the Career Services web site and assistance can be performed through alternative media on an individual basis.

8.0 Planning and Evaluation

 

8.1 The Director of Career Services will be responsible for an annual plan and budget request  which is due to the immediate supervisor at the time designated by the college planning process.

 

8.2 Evaluation of student opinion of services can be collected and analyzed when staff are added to support this function.

 

9.0 Web Site

 

9.1 Career Services will maintain a web site that supports a minimum of job listings, career planning tools, career specific information, job search data and other appropriate information.

 

9.2 The web site will be updated in accordance with the institution’s web site policies in a timely manner.

 

10.0 Professional Development

 

10.1 Career Services will maintain membership in NACE and in its regional or state associations if budget allows.

 

10.2 Memberships in other professional organizations will be evaluated against budget limits.

 

11.0 Legal and Ethical Considerations

 

11.1 All policies and procedures will be in compliance with applicable state, federal and municipal laws and regulations and must be approved by the appropriate vice president.

 

11.2 All policies and procedures will be in compliance with NACE ethical standards.

 

12.0 Employer Services

 

12.1 Part-time and full-time jobs listed with career services will be posted for 30 days unless otherwise notified by the employer.

 

12.2 All job postings must comply with EEOC and other applicable federal and state laws and guidelines.

 

12.3 Only jobs for licensed businesses will be posted. Jobs for individual child care, elder care or other personal care outside of licensed businesses will not be posted through the Office of Career Services. Network marketing or similar opportunities will not be posted. Third party postings will require the listing of the employer for whom the third party is recruiting..

 

12.4 The Coordinator of Career Services can approve or deny employer requests for job postings, campus interviews, career fair attendance and links to the Career Services web site.

 

12.5 Employers with  job openings can request campus interviews with students and alumni. The request must come at least 30 days in advance of the interview date.

 

12.6 A career fair or other group recruiting event will be held in either Fall or Spring semester based on student interest and demand. Employers can request a recruiting table which will be awarded as registrations are received until all available slots are filled.

 

12.7 Employers can request for a link to be added to the Career Services web site which must be approved by the Coordinator of Career Services and comply with all internal, state and federal regulations.
