- What is the difference between a graphic design art degree
and a graphic design mass communication degree? Generally, the
art major would take more art fundamental courses, while the Mass
communications major would take additional courses from the college of
mass communications.
- What do the universities in our area expect in the way of
portfolio preparation? 4 year art programs are looking for
evidence of foundation skills in the area of basic 2D and 3D design,
drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpture.
- How does our degree transfer to universities in our area?
Students that complete their A.A. or A.S. degree at Columbia State will
find it easy to transfer to other Tennessee Board of Regents
institutions upon graduation.
- What types of specialized art degrees do art schools such as
Savannah have that area universities do not? Savannah offers a wide
range of specific, specialized degrees, such as illustration, multimedia
and digital video. MTSU while offering more general degrees, has
equally capable faculty, facilities and equipment.
- What kind of certification is required to teach art? A
teachers certificate with an emphasis in art is required to teach in the
public school system.

What is the difference in receiving an A.S. degree and an A.A.
degree in art? The Associate of Arts
degree with an emphasis in art is designed for those students who plan
to transfer into a B.A. program in Studio Art, Graphic Design, or
Interior Design. Students may obtain the Associate of Arts degree with
an emphasis in art by completing six (6) hours of a single foreign
language.
The Associate of Science degree with an emphasis in art is intended to
prepare a student to transfer into a four-year program in art. Since
lower division requirements in art at senior institutions vary widely,
it is strongly recommended that students intending to complete a
four-year program in art consult the catalog of the institution to which
they intend to transfer. One of the primary institution to which they
