Student Leadership Institute – this forum has a positive impact on diverse students (priority for seniors and juniors) in Columbia State’s 9-county area high schools. Students are invited from the following counties: Giles, Hickman, Lawrence, Lewis, Marshall, Maury, Perry, Williamson, and Wayne. This is an annual event and all high schools receive an invitation for their junior and senior students to attend. The Student Leadership Institute is usually held during the month of November. The scope of the institute is to focus on leadership skills, community skills, personal development, financial planning, career, and education options. (include photos of students from previous institutes).
Minority Student Advisory Team – This organization is open to all historically under-represented students enrolled at Columbia State Community College. Applications are available at the Office of Access & Diversity. Once the application is completed and received by the Office of Access & Diversity, it is reviewed and ten diverse students will be chosen to serve this academic year. Students will be involved in campus-wide and community activities throughout the year. Members of this organization will support the academic success initiatives of the College.
Dialogues of My Experience (ME) in Diversity and Cultural Development – This organization is open to all historically under-represented groups in higher education at the faculty and staff member level. This supportive environment provides opportunities to become acquainted with one another and the entire college community. Opportunities for growth will include leadership training, mentoring of students and professional development. Sessions are held quarterly. Contact the Office of Access & Diversity if you would like more information about this organization.
Generational Mentoring Program (GMP) – The primary purpose of the Generational Mentoring Program (GMP) is to share information concerning Columbia State Community College and the services available for students with adult mentors in the communities the college serves. Mentors will be trained to share information with potential students concerning admissions, registration, financial aid, academics, advising and career planning. It is essential for first-generation, single-parents and other diverse students to have an “education champion” in their lives. These mentors will be members of our communities who may be characterized as local citizens, business owners, faith-based leaders, retirees, and organizational leaders and members. Mapping the Comprehensive Academic Plan - Academic Roadmap, Destination…Success – The primary purpose of this program is to develop and implement a formal plan for identifying students who are historically at risk for completing higher education and developing a comprehensive plan that outlines support services and provides follow-up with students. This service proves helpful as it enhances structure and accountability while providing general moral support.
