Improving Placement

 

Please refer to the sections below to best determine how to improve your placement:

ACT Prep Class (Williamson County Campus) Do your best on the ACT.  This course can give you guided practice and review of test taking skills and concepts in English, math, reading and science as they are presented on the ACT.  This course is for new test takers and test repeaters who want to improve their scores.  Course fees include all books and materials.  These classes meet one evening per week for five weeks and are 2 ½ hours in length. The class is scheduled to begin on May 31  from 5:30 until 8:00 pm and will end on June 28, 2012.  The fee for the class is $109 and includes text.
 


Math students who scored below 13 on the ACT Math (or who have an equivalent COMPASS score):

  • Students whose math placement does not meet the requirements to enter Learning Support Math may work to improve their placement using MyMathTest, and you may work on it at at home or on campus in the Teaching and Learning Center (Columbia and Franklin only), in one of our computer labs, or in the library.
  • In addition, students may contact the Tennessee Career Center in their area and receive an access code to use PLATO software that has been aligned to prepare students for the COMPASS test. PLATO can be accessed through the Internet, and you may work on it at a Tennessee Career Center, at home, or on campus in the Teaching and Learning Center (Columbia and Franklin only), in one of our computer labs, or in the library.
  • The Literacy Council of Williamson County will provide free tutoring in Math, Reading, and Writing.
  • 10-week access codes to a version of MyFoundationsLab that has been aligned to our COMPASS test may be purchased at our Williamson and Columbia bookstores or online at MyFoundationsLab using this ISBN: 205187706.

Math students who scored 17 or 18 on the ACT Math (or who have an equivalent COMPASS score):

  • Students who scored a 17 or 18 in MATH on the ACT and tested into Learning Support Math may be interested in improving their placement using MyMathTest software, and you may work on it at at home or on campus in the Teaching and Learning Center (Columbia and Franklin only), in one of our computer labs, or in the library.
  • In addition, students may contact the Tennessee Career Center in their area and receive an access code to use PLATO software that has been aligned to prepare students for the COMPASS test. PLATO can be accessed through the Internet, and you may work on it at a Tennessee Career Center, at home, or on campus in the Teaching and Learning Center (Columbia and Franklin only), in one of our computer labs, or in the library.
  • 10-week access codes to a version of MyFoundationsLab that has been aligned to our COMPASS test may be purchased at our Williamson and Columbia bookstores or online at MyFoundationsLab using this ISBN: 205187706. 

Reading students who scored below 13 on the ACT Reading (or who have an equivalent COMPASS score):

  • Students may work online within Townsend Press online workbooks Groundwork for College Reading and Ten Steps to Building College Reading Skills 
  • Students may contact the Tennessee Career Center in their area and receive an access code to use PLATO software that has been aligned to prepare students for the COMPASS test. PLATO can be accessed through the Internet, and you may work on it at a Tennessee Career Center, at home, or on campus in the Teaching and Learning Center (Columbia and Franklin only), in one of our computer labs, or in the library.
