Welcome to the Respiratory Care Department at Columbia State Community College. The Respiratory Care Department is located in the Walter Building on the Columbia Campus and is part of the Division of Health Sciences.

Respiratory therapists provide assessment, diagnostic evaluation, treatment and care for patients with breathing disorders. Respiratory therapists have special expertise in artificial ventilation, resuscitation and airway management. They care for patients in the emergency room, nursery and intensive care units. Respiratory therapists work in hospitals, long term care facilities, physician offices and in homes.
According to the 2006-2007 edition of the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Handbook, employment for respiratory therapist is expected to increase 23% through 2016. The BLS stated the median income for respiratory therapist was $47,000 per year. Training includes lecture, laboratory and clinical practice. Students participate in supervised hands on care at a variety of area healthcare institutions. Patient care experiences include adult, pediatric and neonatal training.
All students entering the program are required to have a physical, a criminal background check and a drug screen. Positive results for either the criminal background check or the drug screen will eliminate the student from the program. Detailed information is available from the program director. Any felony convictions must be reported to the program director.
The respiratory care program at Columbia State Community College is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (www.caahep.org) upon recommendation of the Committee on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC).
